Can digital technology help students in government schools learn English? Evidence from the Corporation Girls School in Puliyakulam, Tamil Nadu suggests that the answer is yes!

Thanks to the RightToRead initiative, the white screen, projector and computer have replaced the blackboard, chalk and duster. Their textbook’s content has been fed into the ReadToMe software and the children speak in English along with the voice that teaches them to read in English. The software helps students learn English. The new system aims to make the students self-reliant in the education process.

The idea to weave technology and education together is the brainchild of EnglishHelper, a global company that works in partnership with American India Foundation. As a result of this intervention children enrolled in government schools that are a part of the RighToRead initiative have the opportunity to develop their English language skills.
