One major hurdle has been surpassed, your resume has impressed the interviewer! You have now been called in for an in person interview. You have done your research about the company and are feeling confident. But, be careful to never say these 5 things when you get there!

“How much time off do I get?”

Avoid asking about how many vacation days you are entitled to. If you ask this question it will give the interviewer the impression that you are not entirely committed to the job you are applying for. It makes it seem as though you are more eager to get out of work, rather than to work hard and prove yourself as an asset to the company.

“Do you mind if I take this call? It is urgent”

Answering a phone call in the middle of an interview is considered to be rude. Before you begin any interview, make sure your phone is on silent mode, or switched off. If you answer your phone and ask to be excused from the interview, you give the interviewer the impression that this opportunity is not a serious priority for you. Furthermore, you will be wasting the interviewer’s time.

“I want this job because it will give me…”

Be careful when you talk about what you will gain by working for a company. If you only talk about the skills and experience that you will get by being employed at a company, there is chance that you may come across as selfish. Instead, it is a good idea to talk about what you can contribute to the company that you are interviewing at. Talk about what you can do for them rather than what they can do for you.

“My last job was terrible”

Be careful not to speak badly of your previous employers. Complaining about your last job may make it seem like you have the inability to cope with challenging situations. You might also come across as a person who is difficult to work with. Speaking badly about your previous employers may also make it seem like you lack the maturity to act professionally in the workplace. Try to evaluate challenges you have faced in previous positions rather than complaining about them.

“Tell me about the company?”

Questions like this make it obvious to the interviewer that you have not researched and prepared well for the interview. In such situations, they will make up their mind early to not hire you. Any questions that you ask the interviewer about the job should be targeted and specific, and the best way to ensure that you will ask insightful questions is to do adequate research about the company you are interviewing at.

These are just some examples of what not say during a job interview. The more prepared you are, the more unlikely you will be to ask the wrong type of question. However, in some cases, preparation might not be enough.
