How does one define a citizen? Is he someone who belongs to a given country? What does that mean? Typically, people born in a country or those who may have immigrated are considered citizens. Going a step further, who qualifies as a good citizen? Now, this could be a bit tricky since perspectives may differ. However, for our sake, let’s try and keep it simple. Here are a few attributes that could be considered for a citizen to pass the test: they obey the laws of the country, they are aware of their rights and obligations, they respect other citizens and they can be counted upon by fellow citizens in times of need. Companies are societies in their own right. Employees are their citizens. As English is widely used in the corporate world, employees should be fluent in English language.

Companies and society at large benefit when employees take their company citizenship obligations seriously. Drawing from the national citizenship analogy, what does this translate to for corporate employees? In essence, a few important elements stand out: pride and a sense of belonging must be palpable; believing in and behaving as per the company’s values is essential.

Motivated Employees

Companies invest heavily in building engaged workforces. They seek employees who look at the employment relationship beyond just a job. They hope to find a place in the hearts of their people. When that happens, companies find business performance improves. Truly motivated citizens can build a magical society.

Good Leaders

Leaders who ‘walk this talk’ are coveted. These are the people who in turn can develop extraordinary teams. Leaders who are known for consistency, for empathy, for reliability are sought after. Business captains love to be surrounded by such people. Teams enjoy working with them.

Often, such leaders are engaged similarly outside the work arena. They will be found supporting the cause of the not so fortunate. They will fiercely comply with the laws of the land. They will be engaged in helping build the nation.

The best companies recognize this attribute as necessary for entrusting leaders with enhanced responsibility. Leaders have a wide ranging impact. Employees look up to them as role models. They influence the way a business interacts with various stakeholders. Personal integrity guides professional actions and that in turn enables the culture of the company. Company brands are made or destroyed by the actions of those who are in positions of power and authority.

The habits of citizenship are pervasive. They define true character. They are the hallmark of leaders who do ordinary things extraordinarily well. Good citizens make great leaders.
