‘Sofia Khan is Not Obliged’ by Ayisha Malik

Ayisha Malik is British-Muslim author. In this book, Malik tells the story of Sofia Khan, a woman who lives in London, and works in the world of publishing. This light hearted and hilarious book follows the life of Sofia Khan as she deals with everyday challenges that women face at work, while writing a book about what it is like to date and look for romance as a Muslim woman living in a foreign country. This book is politically relevant as it addresses harmful biases that are placed upon Muslim immigrants by western media.

‘The Private Life of Mrs. Sharma’ by Ratika Kapur

Ratika Kapur is an Indian novelist. In her book, Kapur tells the story of Renuka Sharma, a wife, mother, and daughter-in-law. Renuka lives in Delhi and manages her house, while her husband works in Dubai to try and provide for his family. Renuka Sharma tries to hold on to her traditional values while India is rapidly changing around her, and she works hard as receptionist to make sure that there is a place for her family in this new world. Her life changes after she starts a conversation with a stranger at a metro station, and the story goes on to examine how tradition and modernity clash in a society that is not ready to change.

‘A Moonless, Starless Sky: Ordinary Women and Men Fighting Extremism in Africa’ by Alexis Okeowo

Alexis Okeowo is a Nigerian-American author. In her book, she tells us four stories from four different parts of modern Africa; A young couple that is kidnapped by Joseph Kony’s LRA; a Mauritian that is fighting an individual battle against modern slavery; a vigilante who wages war against Boko Haram; and a women’s basketball team that is flourishing in war-torn Somalia. What unites these independent stories is that ordinary people are living extraordinary lives, and accomplishing unbelievable things despite facing extreme odds.

‘The Best We Could Do’ by Thi Bui

Thi Bui is a Vietnamese graphic novelist and writer. In her debut graphic novel, she tells a detailed story of her family’s immigration from Vietnam to the United States during the Vietnam War. The graphic novel examines love, family and legacy. It explains how we inherit our parents lived experiences, and eventually pass them down to our own children. It also explores Identity and the discrimination face by the Bui family as a result of the ongoing war.
