‘Home Fire’ by Kamila Shamsie

Kamila Shamsie is a British-Pakistani novelist. In ‘Home Fire,’ she tells a story about what it is like to be a British-Muslim living in modern day London. The book focuses on the lives of two families. One family is encouraged to portray physical evidence of their ‘muslim-ness’ by the dominant male figure who heads it, for his involvement in politics. The other family is less privileged than the first. They are constantly struggling with their identity and the need to belong. Shamsie tells a compassionate story about how these two families’ lives get merged with one another. And how they deal with their issues while facing political and personal factors beyond their control.

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ by Celeste Ng

Celeste Ng is a Chinese-American author. In ‘Little Fires Everywhere,’ She tells the story of Elena Richardson, a contented housewife living with her family in a small city in Ohio, America. Set in the mid 90’s, the story details the perfect life of Elena, who has lived by expectations set for women by society. Her world is changed completely when she meets a traveling artist Mia, and her daughter Pearl. Pearl and Mia are constantly moving around the country and never stay in one location for more than 6 months. As Elena and Mia get more involved in each others’ lives, the story begins to expose difficult truths about perfect suburban life.

‘The Windfall’ by Diksha Basu

Diksha Basu is an Indian author. In ‘The Windfall,’ she tells the hilarious story of the Jha’s, a middle class couple who discover wealth and move to a rich neighborhood. The story investigates how wealth can change families and marriage. The story is set in New Delhi, India, and examines how fragile class, status, and pride are. Jha’s new neighbors disapprove of their middle class mannerisms, and then how they lose focus of important thngs because of their new wealth. The story follows the unintended consequences that came with the family’s new wealth and how they must reclaim what is truly important to keep the family together and healthy.

‘Bluebird, Bluebird’ by Attica Locke

Attica Locke is a celebrated African-American novelist. In ‘Bluebird, Bluebird,’ she continues her recurring theme of what it means to be black in the American South, a place that has a history of deep rooted racism. In this book, Locke tells the story of Darren Mathews, a high ranking black police officer who lives in Texas. The story explains the history of race and power in the south when a local white woman is murdered. Then how Darren must find a balance between his own racial wounds and his duty to uphold the law. This book is an emotional investigation of how race and law have continued to keep racism alive in the American South.
