Software Solution to Improve the English Language in Gujarat
Weakness in understanding the English language is a problem for poor children in government schools in Gujarat. Children from economically deprived sections of society in Gujarat are not introduced to the English alphabet until the fifth grade. What then is the best way to help improve English language comprehension amongst these children?
Using computers provided by the Gujarat government to its primary schools, ReadToMe is equipping children from poor backgrounds with the opportunity to improve their English language skills. ReadToMe is an English language tool that has been developed by EnglishHelper in partnership with the American India Foundation, as a part of the RightToRead initiative. It helps students to read English with correct pronunciation.
Charles Kothari of EnglishHelper explained that the ReadToMe software is being used across 80 government schools across Gujarat in districts such as Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Amreli, and Ahmedabad. A teacher who uses this software regularly to teach says that once students start speaking in English, their phobia of English goes away within a few days.
